NASA Sends Cat Video Over 19 Million Miles
NASA Sends Cat Video:
NASA has accomplished a remarkable feat in space exploration by successfully transmitting a high-definition video of a cat across a distance of over 19 million miles (over 30 million km) using its Deep Space Optical Communications technology. This achievement marks a significant milestone in the field of space exploration, as it is the first time that NASA has sent a broadband video such a vast distance.
The groundbreaking video was transmitted from NASA’s Psyche asteroid probe, which was launched in October 2023 and is currently on a six-year mission to travel around 2.2 billion miles (3.6 billion km). The mission’s primary objective is to rendezvous with a rare, metal-rich asteroid that is expected to provide valuable insights into the formation of rocky planet cores in our solar system.
The video, featuring a cute cat named “Taters,” was uploaded to the Psyche probe before launch and transmitted back to Earth on December 11, as part of a secondary mission to its primary objectives. It was created by designers at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) as part of the Psyche mission.
This incredible achievement was made possible by the use of a flight laser transceiver, which enabled NASA to transmit the video from the Psyche spacecraft to the Hale Telescope at Caltech’s Palomar Observatory in California. The distance covered by the transmission was a record-setting 80 times the distance between Earth and the Moon.
This groundbreaking accomplishment highlights the immense potential of optical communications technology for space exploration and opens up new possibilities for future missions. NASA’s ability to transmit high-quality video across vast distances will undoubtedly pave the way for more advanced and sophisticated space exploration missions in the future. This achievement is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the many people who made it possible.
