Shigar Fort a Cultural Heritage in Gilgit Baltistan, Pakistan
Shigar Fort is a historic fort of Pakistan. Shigar Fort means “The Fort on Rock” also called “فونگ کھر” (means palace of stone) in local balti language spoken by the ethnic balti people in Baltistan region of Gilgit Baltistan. The fort was built in the 17th century by the Raja of Amacha dynasty in Shigar. The fort served as the residence of the local rulers for over 400 years.
Shigar Fort Location
Shigar Fort is located in the town of Shigar, in District Skardu of Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan. The town of Shigar is located in the Shigar valley which is approximately 23 kilometers away from the city of Skardu. You can easily reach the fort by road from Skardu. Skardu airport is the nearest airport to the fort, has regular flights from Islamabad.
Design of the Fort
Shigar fort’s design is a good example of beautiful traditional Balti architecture of Amacha dynasty. The fort has mud and stone walls, intricate wood carvings, and traditional Islamic and Tibetan-style designs. The fort has been restored by Agha Khan Cultural Service Pakistan. The restoration process of the fort took over 5 years from 1999 to 2004 which cost approximately $1.4 million. Serena Hotels took control of the fort after restoration and converted it to a luxury hotel along with museum.
